A Viking Longship

Today Jeff brought home supper from Arby's and

when I told him what I has seen on Facebook,
we went to the Ilion Marina to eat it and see the Viking long ship, Draken, that was docked there.  It's 114 ft. long, 26 ft. wide, 29 ft. high, and weights 10 tons.   Made out of oak and spruce, the wood is treated with linseed oil and turpentine.  The sail is maroon silk. There are 50 oar holes on each side but only 25 have
been used...the ship moves faster under sail.
There is suppose to be a craved dragon's head on the front of the ship but it...and the mast...had to be removed so the vessel could fit under the canal bridges.  Draken will travel thru Lock 18 at Jacksonburg tomorrow morning and spend the weekend at the marina in Little Falls.  (Tours onboard will be available for $10 and $5.)
Draken left Norway in April, traveled thru the North Sea, crossed the Atlantic Ocean to the St. Lawrence River, cruised around the Great Lakes and entered the Erie Canal at Buffalo.  The 25-person
crew hopes to make it to New York City by mid-September.  What a way to spend a summer vacation, huh?
